Who Is Tommie Moore?
Tommie Moore was born in Pasadena, California in 1917. Credited on films since 1940, as an actor. The background, training and the roles that shaped the career.
Tommie Moore was an American actress whose career spanned theater, film, and television during the mid-twentieth century. Born Pretty Tomiwitta Moore on December 2, 1917, in Pasadena, California, she shortened her name for professional purposes, though she was occasionally credited under her full birth name. Her father had originally hoped for a boy to name Thomas, which led to her unusual given name of Tomiwitta. As a child growing up in Pasadena, she developed an early passion for performing on stage, foreshadowing the vibrant career that would define her life in the entertainment industry.
Moore's professional journey began in earnest when she traveled to New York to attend dramatic school, but instead found herself employed as a page girl at the legendary Cotton Club. Among her duties at the club was escorting the renowned W.C. Handy on and off the stage, providing her with invaluable exposure to the world of entertainment. In 1946, she took on the starring role in a touring production of Claudia, showcasing her dramatic talents to audiences across the country. That same year, she left Claudia to join the original theatrical production of Beggar's Holiday, where she played Tawdry Audrey in a memorable scene that required her to run across the stage in a two-handkerchief bathing suit.
Her theatrical achievements continued in 1950 when she performed as part of a chorus of three, alongside Eartha Kitt and Helena Hughes, in Orson Welles' production of The Blessed and the Damned in Paris. Both Beggar's Holiday and The Blessed and the Damned featured music by the legendary Duke Ellington, situating Moore within significant musical productions of the era. In her film career, she garnered particular acclaim for her role in The Green-Eyed Blonde (1957), with a Variety review calling her a standout and Ebony magazine profiling her around the time of the film's release. She also appeared on television shows such as The Amos 'n Andy Show and Bourbon Street Beat. Beyond her entertainment career, Moore was engaged to postal worker George Gray and was actively involved with the Red Cross, demonstrating her commitment to community service.
