Susan Beaumont (born Susan Anna Black) was an English film actress whose career, though brief, left a notable mark on British cinema during the 1950s. Born on 26 February 1936 in London, England, she came from a distinguished entertainment family, being the daughter of musical comedy actress Roma Beaumont and producer/impresario Alfred Black, and the granddaughter of the renowned producer George Black. This rich theatrical heritage undoubtedly influenced her early path into the performing arts. Despite attending the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), Beaumont left after only one term, choosing instead to gain practical experience in the entertainment industry. She found her first professional work in pantomime and subsequently danced for the legendary comedian Norman Wisdom at the London Palladium, also performing in the musical Limelight. At the age of nineteen, she became a Rank contractee, which launched her into the world of film, where she starred as a leading lady in several productions between 1956 and 1959. Her filmography includes notable titles such as Eyewitness (1956), The Spaniard's Curse (1958), No Safety Ahead (1959), and Man of the Moment (1959). She is perhaps best remembered by audiences for her role as Nurse Frances James in the beloved British comedy Carry On Nurse (1959). Her career, though spanning just five years from 1955 to 1959, produced a body of work that included films like Simon and Laura (1955), Jumping for Joy (1956), High Tide at Noon (1957), Innocent Sinners (1958), On the Run (1958), The Man Who Liked Funerals (1959), and Web of Suspicion (1959). In 1956, she was featured in a Gaumont British Newsreel covering the Cannes Film Festival, further cementing her status as a rising star in British cinema. Susan Beaumont passed away on 25 February 2020 at the age of 83, just one day before her 84th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of classic performances.
