Guy Stevenson is a British man of Spanish heritage, in poor health, on trial for the murder of an actress named Zoe Trevor. He is convicted and given the death sentence. He protests his innocence and places a curse on the trial judge, Judge Manton; the prosecuting counsel, Sir Robert Wyvern; the foreman of the jury, and the real murderer. The curse is a summons to attend the Assize of the Dying.

Watching the proceedings from the court gallery are Justice Manton’s ward, Margaret Manton; his son, Charlie Manton; and Zoe Trevor’s half-brother, Mark Brett. Charlie Manton is on the scene as a newspaper reporter, a decorated ex-RAF officer who also has a taste for gambling, bringing a mix of discipline and risk to the courtroom drama.

After the trial, Margaret Manton begins to doubt Stevenson’s guilt and grows closer to Mark Brett. Mark, who claims to have arrived from abroad and to have never met his half-sister, becomes entangled in the suspicion surrounding the case. Their growing connection drives them to re-examine the evidence, seeking angles that the official proceedings might have missed and looking for a hidden truth that could overturn the verdict.

The tension escalates when tragedy strikes: the foreman of the jury is killed in a road accident right before their eyes, a chilling reminder that the curse may be more than a superstition. Stevenson dies of a heart condition before his sentence can be carried out, and newly surfaced evidence begins to point toward his innocence, offering a possible exoneration that complicates the public narrative.

As Margaret and Mark pursue the truth, their investigation unfolds with cautious steps and shared resolve. They move forward with the belief that the case deserves a careful, unhurried re-examination, even as the curse’s ominous shadow seems to influence those around them. Charlie Manton remains a watchful observer, nudging the pursuit of truth while navigating his own feelings for Margaret and the unsettling aura cast by the summons. The story weaves together courtroom procedure, personal loyalties, and a supernatural insinuation that tests the boundaries of evidence, justice, and belief, all while the central mystery—what really happened to Zoe Trevor—gradually comes into sharper focus as the pieces begin to align.
