Stephen David Daldry CBE, born May 2, 1960, is an English director and producer of film, theatre, and television. He has excelled in his profession receiving numerous awards including three Tony Awards for his work on Broadway, an Olivier Award for his work in the West End and has been nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Director. Daldry's notable films include Billy Elliot (2000), The Hours (2002), and The Reader (2008). From 2016 to 2020, he also produced and directed the Netflix television series The Crown, earning himself a Producers Guild Award and a couple of Primetime Emmy Awards.

Stephen Daldry's remarkable career began in his local youth theatre group in Taunton, Somerset. His love for the performing arts led him to pursue further studies in English at the University of Sheffield, becoming chairman of the university's theatre group. After a short stint as a clown's apprentice in Italy, he completed an acting course at East 15 Acting School. His initial strides in his profession started at the Sheffield Crucible as an apprentice. Throughout his career, he has held significant roles in various theatres, including Artistic Director of the Royal Court Theatre and London's Gate Theatre. In 2000, he took his directorial talent to the film industry, showcasing his skills in the celebrated film Billy Elliot. He later continued to direct successful films such as The Reader (2008) and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.
