In ancient Rome, the celebrated general Maximus is betrayed when the ambitious Commodus murders Emperor Marcus Aurelius and destroys his family. Stripped of his rank and devastated, Maximus survives and finds himself forced to disguise himself as a gladiator. He rises through the ranks of the Colosseum, seeking to avenge his loved ones and expose Commodus's treachery, ultimately fighting to restore honor and justice to Rome.
