Stanley Earl Kramer (September 29, 1913 – February 19, 2001) was a celebrated American film director and producer, renowned for his attention-grabbing social issues that most studios avoided. Known for his "message films", Kramer tackled subjects such as racism, nuclear war, greed, creationism vs. evolution, and the causes/effects of fascism in his films. His filmography includes classics such as 'High Noon', 'The Caine Mutiny', and 'Ship of Fools'. Highly respected by his peers, director Steven Spielberg described him as an "incredibly talented visionary" and "one of the great filmmakers". Despite mixed critical reception, Kramer's films have garnered numerous awards, including 16 Academy Awards and 80 nominations. He received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1961 and was a member of the jury at the 3rd Moscow International Film Festival in 1963. He was awarded the first NAACP Vanguard Award in recognition of "the strong social themes" in his work in 1998. Kramer was born in New York City, and his early work experiences included a stint at his mother's Paramount Pictures office and distribution work at Universal Pictures. He developed a "zest for writing" while attending New York University and spent his early career years in various roles within the film industry.
