Shigeru Izumiya (泉谷しげる, born May 11, 1948 in Aomori Prefecture) is a multifaceted Japanese artist known for his contributions as a poet, folk singer, actor and tarento. Raised in the Meguro district of Tokyo, he began performing in the early 1970s and quickly became a prominent voice in the Japanese folk movement, releasing his debut single “Kaerimichi” in 1971 and following up with a string of influential records such as Shunkashuutou and Haru no Karatsu Kaze. His lyrical style often blends social commentary with whimsical imagery, earning him a devoted fan base and critical acclaim throughout the decades. In 1975 he co‑founded the legendary independent label For Life Records alongside Takuro Yoshida, Yosui Inoue and Hitoshi Komuro, a venture that helped shape the modern Japanese music industry and provided a platform for many singer‑songwriters. Izumiya’s artistic curiosity led him to the silver screen where he not only acted in films like Eijanaika (1981) and Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) but also directed the cult sci‑fi thriller Death Powder in 1986, showcasing his experimental storytelling sensibilities. Between August 1995 and March 1996 he co‑hosted the pioneering Satellaview program “King of After School” with pop icon Ayumi Hamasaki, further cementing his reputation as a versatile media personality. His discography spans over five decades, featuring more than thirty albums and dozens of singles that range from folk ballads to rock‑infused anthems, and his voice has appeared in acclaimed anime such as Pom Poko (1994) where he voiced Gonta. On television he is perhaps best remembered for his recurring role as Dr. Shigeo Ando in the popular series Dr. Coto’s Clinic (2003‑2006), a performance that highlighted his nuanced acting ability.
