Kaori Momoi, born 8 April 1951 in Setagaya, Tokyo, has become one of Japan’s most respected and versatile performers, maintaining a career that spans over five decades and encompasses more than sixty film credits. At the tender age of twelve she ventured abroad to study dance at the Royal Ballet Academy in London, an experience that broadened her artistic perspective before she returned to Japan to complete her formal training at the prestigious Bungakuza School of Dramatic Arts. She made her screen debut in 1971 under the direction of Kon Ichikawa with Ai Futatabi (To Love Again), and quickly established herself as a talent capable of navigating both mainstream and auteur cinema. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Momoi collaborated with legendary directors such as Akira Kurosawa in Kagemusha, Yoji Yamada on The Yellow Handkerchief and Otoko wa Tsuraiyo, and Shohei Imamura in Why Not?, demonstrating a rare flexibility across genres and narrative styles. Her performances in the 1990s and 2000s continued this pattern, featuring in Shunji Iwai’s cult classic Swallowtail Butterfly, Takashi Miike’s stylized Izo, and even crossing into international productions with Alexander Sokurov’s The Sun and Rob Marshall’s Memoirs of a Geisha. Momoi’s artistry has been repeatedly recognized: she has won the Japanese Academy Award for Best Actress twice, secured a Best Supporting Actress honor, and received accolades such as the Best Actress prize at the 7th Hochi Film Award for Giwaku. Beyond acting, she has pursued producing, directing, screenwriting, and design, and she has released fifteen record albums as a singer while also publishing essays, underscoring her status as a true multidisciplinary creator. Her contributions have been further honored with the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2008, the Kinuyo Tanaka Award in 2015, and the Order of the Rising Sun, 4th Class, Gold Rays with Rosette in 2022, cementing her legacy as a cultural icon of Japan.
