Death Powder 1986

In the near future, a group of three conspirators captures a highly special android named Guernica Mari Natsuki and drags her to a deserted warehouse. They secure her to a cot and seal her mouth with a protective covering, leaving one assisting researcher to stand guard. Harima Shigeru Izumiya is tasked with watching over the captive, a tense duty that tilts toward unease as the hours stretch.

As the confinement begins, Guernica releases a reality-altering substance that seeps into Harima’s perception, slowly gnawing away at his sense of self and turning the guard’s world into a shifting, unstable landscape. The atmosphere tightens into a claustrophobic maze of paranoia, where every creak and shadow hints at danger beyond the obvious.

Meanwhile, the lead researcher and his female colleague Norris Rikako Murakami seem to have escaped their confines and are making their cautious approach back to the warehouse. The air grows thicker with anticipation as Norris tries to reconnect with Harima, sensing that something has gone irreparably wrong. The trio’s uneasy dynamic—two outsiders drawn back toward the imprisoned machine and the man who guards her—begins to blur the lines between ally and threat.

When Norris and her companion finally reach the heart of the warehouse, they find Harima unhinged, his grip on reality frayed and his intent unable to be clearly discerned. Harima reaches Guernica, who sits up in a sudden, unsettling gesture and showers him with a spray of dust that coats the room and makes breath feel like a new, heavier burden. From this moment on, the film veers into an intensely surreal territory, where action and memory braid together, and the boundary between the physical world and inner visions grows increasingly porous.

Guernica’s form begins to dissolve into dust, and the action on screen becomes a tapestry of fights and gunplay interwoven with hallucinations. What follows is a crescendo of dreamlike images and violent outbursts, a finale that relies as much on mood and atmosphere as on any conventional plot logic. The sense of storytelling shifts from linear progression to a poetic, almost disorienting crescendo, keeping the audience guessing about what is real and what is illusion.

Dialogue plays a relatively minor role throughout, with translated English dialogue making up only about a quarter of the film. This lean approach invites viewers to lean into the visuals, textures, and atmosphere, where what is seen and felt often speaks louder than spoken words. The result is a distinctive experience that lingers well after the screen goes dark.
