Sarita Catherine Louise Choudhury (born 18 August 1966) is an English actress of Indian‑Bengali descent who has built a trans‑Atlantic career spanning more than three decades. Born in Blackheath, London, she spent much of her childhood in Jamaica and Italy before moving to Canada to study economics and film at Queen’s University in Kingston, graduating in 1989. Her screen debut came opposite Denzel Washington in Mira Nair’s critically acclaimed romantic drama Mississippi Masala (1991), a role that earned her a Screen Actors Guild card while she was still waiting tables in Manhattan’s East Village. Choudhury quickly became known for her versatility, appearing as a Pakistani country‑western singer in the British comedy Wild West (1992), a Chilean maid in Bille August’s adaptation of The House of the Spirits, and a lesbian mother in the experimental Fresh Kill (1994). In 1996 she starred as the Indian princess Tara in Nair’s controversial erotic romance Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, a film that was banned in India but cemented her reputation for fearlessly tackling complex, adult themes. Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s she balanced mainstream Hollywood thrillers such as A Perfect Murder (1998) and Restless (1998) with independent projects like The War Within (2005) and M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water (2006). On television she delivered memorable performances as Dr. Kalyani on Homicide: Life on the Street, Mira Berenson on Homeland (2011‑2017), and Kith Lyonne on Netflix’s Jessica Jones (2019). More recently she has appeared in The Green Knight (2021), the horror film Evil Eye (2020), and the HBO Max revival And Just Like That… where she plays Seema Patel, a role that critics have praised as a fresh addition to the Sex and the City universe. In addition to her acting work, Choudhury is a mother to her daughter Maria and continues to explore producing opportunities, most recently announced for the family drama series The Colony.
