As American salesman Alan Clay (Tom Hanks) set off on a quest to sell an innovative holographic teleconferencing system to the Saudi government, he found himself in a rather unusual situation. His only link to the King of Saudi Arabia was a distant relative — a nephew, to be precise — which was just enough to earn him a coveted meeting with the monarch. However, Clay carried the heavy burden of his past; his experience at Schwinn Bicycle Company ended in disgrace, with numerous American jobs lost to overseas production, leaving him filled with guilt and regret.

Adding to his troubles was a messy and expensive divorce that drained his finances and made it difficult for him to support his daughter’s education. Upon his arrival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the effects of jet lag soon became apparent, causing him to oversleep and miss his shuttle bus to the King’s Metropolis of Economy and Trade, a dazzling yet unfinished marvel in the desert.

In a scramble to regain his footing, Clay enlisted the help of Yousef (Alexander Black), a local driver who shared tales of his tumultuous romantic life. Together, they formed an unexpected friendship amidst the arid backdrop, with Yousef becoming Clay’s confidant. Upon finally reaching the development site, however, Clay faced disappointment as neither the King nor his contact, Karim Al-Ahmed, were available to meet him.

Instead, Clay and his team were relegated to a makeshift tent outside the office building, where their environment was lacking — with scarce food and little to no internet access. As Clay continued to oversleep and relied on Yousef for rides, their bond deepened, filled with discussions of personal trials and desires.

During one of these trips, Clay ventured into the building and met Hanne, a perceptive Danish executive. She listened attentively as he expressed his frustrations; though she couldn’t arrange a meeting with the King or Karim, she tantalizingly offered him a glass of “olive oil,” which turned out to be an exquisite whiskey. As the sun set, painting the desert in warm hues, Clay felt a flicker of hope — maybe fortune would soon smile upon him.

As the evening progressed, fueled by curiosity and whiskey, Clay attempted to analyze a mysterious lump on his back, waking up the next day to find his shirt stained crimson, symbolizing shattering reality. Seeking comfort at a hospital, he instantly connected with Zahra (played by Sarita Choudhury), the caring doctor who treated his wounds. Her compassionate approach and inquisitive nature left him feeling vulnerable yet intertwined.

As days passed without a resolution, Clay became engulfed in various social engagements, from the enticing party hosted by Hanne at the Danish consulate to the sweltering office building where he finally confronted the elusive Karim Al-Ahmed. Karim’s assurances of resolving issues and offering a glimpse into his luxurious condominium project only heightened Clay’s disorientation.

Meanwhile, Clay’s fragile mental state deteriorated under pressure, triggering a panic attack that led him to seek reassurance from Zahra and Yousef. An unexpected visit from Yousef revealed his own marital struggles and the complications of jealousy from a spouse, further ensnaring Clay in a web of deceit and emotional turmoil.

Time pressed on, and Clay learned that the lump on his back was indeed precancerous, requiring urgent surgery. Amidst his new reality, Clay experienced temporary relief as technical difficulties at the luxury development began to resolve. However, this brief respite shattered when he learned the Saudi government had opted to collaborate with a Chinese company on a rival project, shaking his already precarious world.

As the surgery began, Clay’s nerves were calmed by Zahra’s unexpected involvement in the procedure. Following this, their email correspondence grew intimate and heartfelt, culminating in a secret rendezvous at Zahra’s beach house. With the soothing sound of waves and the warm sunset as a backdrop, they exchanged stories of their pasts, and Zahra candidly spoke of her chaotic divorce.

In the days that ensued, Clay found himself immersed in contrasting experiences — the sterile, technological atmosphere of the hospital juxtaposed with the liberating beauty of Zahra’s beachside escape. As he navigated the complexities of this budding relationship and envisioned a promising future, he composed a sincere letter to his daughter, explaining the unfortunate collapse of the deal but also illuminating the new possibilities ahead. With renewed hope, Clay aspired to reach for a new horizon, one where the allure of the condominium development guided him toward a brighter future and a deeper bond with Zahra.
