Philip Merivale (2 November 1886 – 12 March 1946) was an English actor and screenwriter whose career spanned both the celebrated West End stages and the early Hollywood sound era. Born in the remote settlement of Rehutia, Manickpur, India, he was the son of railway engineer Walter Merivale and Emma Magdalene Pittman, a background that took the family across India, Costa Rica and Barbados before they finally settled in Chiswick, England. His sister Dorothea married Sir Henry Bunbury, the Accountant‑General of the Post Office, linking the Merivales to notable civil service circles. After studying drama, Merivale made his Broadway debut in 1914 as Henry Higgins in Pygmalion, a role that cemented his reputation as a versatile leading man. He continued to appear in major productions such as Pollyanna (1916), The Swan (1923), The Road to Rome (1927), Mary of Scotland (1933), Valley Forge (1934) and The Hour Before the Dawn (1934), where his portrayal of historical figures demonstrated a talent for both wit and gravitas. His personal life was marked by two marriages to fellow actresses: first to Viva Birkett in 1912, a union that produced four children including future actor John Merivale, and later to Gladys Cooper in 1937, who remained his partner until his death from a heart ailment at age fifty‑nine in Los Angeles.
