Percy Thomas Carne Waram was born on 28 October 1880 in Cornwall, United Kingdom to Joseph Carne Waram, a British Army serviceman, and Margaret Frances Powrie, whose family traced its roots to Irish performers. A descendant of the celebrated Elizabethan actress Mary Saunderson Betterton, his early life was steeped in theatrical tradition, and at fifteen he made an impromptu stage debut when a cast member fell ill, playing both a butler and a nurse in the melodrama East Lynne. After joining Sir Ben Greet’s repertory troupe, Waram toured the United States in 1902, marking his American debut in the moral play Everyman at Baltimore’s Maryland Theatre, and he eventually settled permanently in the U.S. in 1908. Over a career that spanned 1899‑1957, he appeared in a staggering array of Shakespearean productions—including Macbeth, Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream—and became renowned for his versatility on the Broadway stage, originating roles such as Horace Vandergelder in The Merchant of Yonkers and Sir William Charteris in The Shanghai Gesture. His portrayal of Sir Walter Raleigh in Elizabeth the Queen and of Marcus Hubbard in Lillian Hellman’s Another Part of the Forest cemented his reputation as a reliable leading man during the turbulent years of the Great Depression. Though his filmography was limited, Waram is now perhaps best remembered for his supporting turn as General Haynesworth in A Face in the Crowd (1956) and for bringing the beloved character Father Day to life in the Chicago production of Life With Father, a role that set box‑office records and even broke his foot during a famously vigorous stage stomp. Waram’s personal life was anchored by his marriage to American actress Lucia Cole in 1909; the couple raised two children, Frances and Julian, while maintaining homes in Stonington, Connecticut, and on the Cornish coast. A devoted member of Actors’ Equity, he enjoyed boating, golf, and cigar smoking, and he remained active on stage until his final Broadway appearance in Monique in 1957, passing away on 5 October 1961 in Huntington, New York.
