At a prestigious law firm, David Maldon Van Johnson is a bright law school student pulled into the firm’s orbit. During a birthday party for the senior partner, his erratic behavior prompts Mary Belney to suspect he has been drinking, though he has not. David suffers from a rare malady called liquor recoil that triggers intoxication at the mere taste of alcohol, and during these episodes he hallucinates, sometimes even imagining a talking dog, a phenomenon that fascinates the analytical Mary.

The central conflict centers on city attorney Carl Bellcap. Bellcap threatens a lawsuit against the firm over the eviction of a Chinese family from their apartment, and David’s intervention seems to tilt the scales in favor of justice. Yet the man behind the eviction, firm partner Charles Parkford, is livid. Parkford cunningly slips wine into David’s soup, then savors watching the young man stumble through a public spectacle. The tension at the dinner table grows as David, with difficulty, confronts Bellcap; villagers at the table are aghast, but Bellcap concedes he has been wrong and pivots to supporting David.

As graduation nears, David makes a bold, principled choice. He resigns from the firm and decides to work for Bellcap and the city for a meager salary, driven by a sense of integrity that outruns prestige. Mary, who has grown to admire his steadfast values, finds herself fighting both her professional indifference and her growing love for him. In the end, the story remains intimate and human: a young man navigating a rare condition, a courtroom drama about housing justice, and a romance tempered by ethics and idealism, all set against the backdrop of a legal world wary of change but moved by genuine conviction.
