Biography

Who Is Pauline Brunius?

Pauline Brunius was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1881. Credited on films since 1920, as an actor. The background, training and the roles that shaped the career.

Pauline Brunius, born Emma Maria Pauline Lindstedt on 10 February 1881 in Stockholm, Sweden, was a pioneering Swedish actress, screenwriter, and theatre director whose career spanned more than four decades and helped shape the nation's cultural landscape. She trained at the Operans Balettelevskola before making her professional debut in 1902 at Olympiateatern in the operetta Primadonnan, performing under her maiden name and quickly establishing herself as a talented performer. In 1909, she married actor and director John W. Brunius, with whom she shared a deep professional partnership; together they co-managed the prestigious Oscarsteatern from 1926 to 1932 alongside fellow Swedish actor Gösta Ekman Sr. During her tenure at Oscarsteatern, she demonstrated remarkable business acumen by securing crucial financial backing from industrialist Ivar Kreuger. Her cinematic career flourished during the silent film era, with notable performances in films such as Thora van Deken (1920), The Eyes of Love (1922), The Blizzard (1923), the historical epic Charles XII (1925), Gustaf Wasa (1928), and Charlotte Löwensköld (1930), among others. In 1938, she achieved a historic milestone by becoming the managing director of the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten), a remarkable accomplishment in the male-dominated entertainment industry of that era. As head of Dramaten, she championed the development of Riksteatern and initiated the construction of Lilla scenen, a second stage designed to expand the national theatre's capacity and artistic range. Her directorship was not without controversy, as she faced criticism for certain play selections during the Second World War and for organizing a guest performance in Berlin in 1941. She resigned from her position at Dramaten in 1948 due to prolonged illness, leaving behind an enduring legacy in Swedish cultural history. Brunius was the devoted mother of two children, actress Anne-Marie Brunius and actor Palle Brunius, both of whom followed in her theatrical footsteps. After a long period of declining health, she passed away on 30 March 1954 at her home in Stockholm at the age of 73, and her funeral was held on 9 April at Hedvig Eleonora Church, presided over by Bishop Manfred Björkquist. She was laid to rest at Galärvarvskyrkogården, where her contributions to Swedish theatre and film continue to be remembered and celebrated by new generations.
