Paul Muni was born Frederich Meshilem Meier Weisenfreund on 1895-09-22 in Lemberg, Austro‑Hungarian Empire (today Lviv, Ukraine). He grew up speaking Yiddish as his first language and emigrated with his Jewish family to Chicago in 1902. His parents, Salli and Phillip Weisenfreund, were both actors, and young Paul began performing in the Yiddish theatre alongside them. By age twelve he was already astonishing audiences by playing an 80‑year‑old man, a talent that foreshadowed his lifelong mastery of makeup and transformation. Recognized by Maurice Schwartz, he joined the Yiddish Art Theatre and later transitioned to English‑language Broadway in 1926 with the play We Americans.

In 1929 Muni signed with Fox, anglicizing his name to Paul Muni, and earned an Oscar nomination for his debut film The Valiant. After a brief return to the stage, he resurfaced in Hollywood with landmark pre‑Code films such as Scarface and I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932), the latter securing his second Best Actor nomination. Warner Bros. lauded him as “the screen’s greatest actor,” and he continued to dominate the studio’s prestige pictures, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936). He repeated Oscar nods for The Life of Emile Zola (1937) and The Last Angry Man (1959), while also claiming a Tony Award for his portrayal of Henry Drummond in Inherit the Wind (1955).

Muni’s method was characterized by exhaustive research—he read every book, letter, and photograph related to his subjects—and meticulous physical preparation, traits that earned him the nickname “the new Lon Chaney.” Despite his fame, he remained shy, avoided public attention, and was known for eccentric habits such as disliking the color red. Health problems, especially a failing left eye that required removal in 1955, gradually limited his work. He retired from film after The Last Angry Man and made a final television appearance in 1962. Paul Muni died of a heart disorder on 1967-08-25 in Montecito, California, leaving a legacy of intense character immersion, five Oscar nominations, a Tony win, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
