Set in a highly fictionalized version of Canada’s early days, the film follows trapper‑explorer Pierre‑Esprit Radisson as he envisions a vast empire around Hudson’s Bay. He wins the trust of Indigenous peoples, clashes with French rivals, and persuades King Charles II to fund a bold expedition of conquest, portraying a larger‑than‑life hero who saves a new world for a ruler who once ordered his death.

In 1667, a trapper, Radisson [Paul Muni], and his companion Gooseberry [Laird Cregar] set out to open a trading post in the Hudson Bay region of northeastern Canada.
They free the jailed Lord Edward Crewe [John Sutton], banished by Charles II [Vincent Price], and this Edward funds their expedition, beginning in Montreal, designed to widen trade with Indigenous peoples and knit a more united land.
Barbara Hall [Gene Tierney], Edward’s sweetheart, and her brother Gerald Hall [Morton Lowry] are drawn into the venture after the explorers travel to England to seek royal favor.
Prince Rupert [Nigel Bruce] helps restore Edward to the king’s good graces, and the king is open to the idea of a trading post if Radisson and his partners deliver 400,000 pelts.
Gerald’s reckless actions incite violence among Indigenous groups, who demand punishment despite the king’s objections.
Over the king’s objections and to Barbara’s horror, Radisson and Gooseberry permit Gerald to be sentenced to death by firing squad.
As the Hudson Bay trading post grows, Barbara forgives her love Edward, and Radisson and Gooseberry celebrate the venture’s hard-won success.
