Born as Sydney Albert Conway on March 16, 1900, in Newark, New Jersey, Morgan Conway emerged from humble Irish Catholic roots as the fifth of six children. Before discovering his calling in the performing arts, Conway spent eleven years working in commercial real estate brokerage in New York City, a career he abandoned in 1933 during the Great Depression. His transition to acting began through serendipitous connections that led him to the New York stage, where he appeared in several Broadway productions including Angel Island, In the Bag, Mimie Scheller, Summer Wives, and If a Body. Venturing west to Hollywood in 1934, he launched his film career with Looking for Trouble starring Spencer Tracy, and spent years freelancing across various studios in supporting roles and bit parts. During this period, he appeared in numerous films such as Charlie Chan in Reno and The Saint Takes Over, establishing himself as a reliable character actor while maintaining his membership in the Screen Actors Guild, though he was often mistakenly credited as a founder due to confusion with actor Morgan Wallace.

Conway's career reached its zenith when RKO Radio Pictures signed him as a contract player in the mid-1940s and selected him to portray Chester Gould's iconic comic strip detective Dick Tracy in a series of feature films. His interpretation of the character was notably restrained and businesslike, eschewing theatricality for a calm, procedural approach that earned praise from critics and writers alike, including Dick Tracy scribe Max Allan Collins who later commended Conway's "splendid interpretation." Despite starring in only two official entries—Dick Tracy (1945) and Dick Tracy vs. Cueball (1946)—before being replaced by Ralph Byrd due to exhibitor pressure, Conway became indelibly associated with the role. Frustrated by typecasting, he attempted to launch an independent production company in 1948 and served briefly as a goodwill ambassador to Mexico, but ultimately abandoned Hollywood in 1949 to return to New Jersey and resume his real estate career. He died of lung cancer on November 16, 1981, at age 81, leaving behind a legacy defined by his dignified portrayal of one of cinema's most famous detectives.
