Born in Manila to celebrated performers Eddie Mesa and Rosemarie Gil, he grew up immersed in a household where the arts were a daily practice, sharing his upbringing with siblings Mark and Cherie Gil, both of whom became prominent actors. Of Swiss, Spanish, and Filipino descent, De Mesa began his on‑screen journey at the tender age of sixteen, debuting in the 1975 film Araw‑araw, Gabi‑gabi before officially entering the professional arena in 1978.
