Mark Earnest Dippé (born November 9, 1956 in Tokyo, Japan) is a pioneering Japanese‑born American film director, visual effects supervisor, and animator whose career has shaped modern computer‑generated imagery. He spent his early childhood in Anchorage, Alaska after his parents—an American father and a Chinese mother who both served in the United States Army—relocated the family in 1960, and a formative visit to the 1958 horror classic The Fly sparked his fascination with transformation effects. At seventeen Dippé left home to pursue higher education, ultimately earning a Ph.D. in computer graphics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1985, where he honed the algorithms that would later define his breakthrough work. In 1988 he joined Industrial Light & Magic, contributing the code for the iconic photorealistic water pseudopod in James Cameron’s The Abyss, a sequence animated by Steve “Spaz” Williams that demonstrated the potential of fluid simulation. His reputation skyrocketed when he co‑developed the groundbreaking T‑1000 liquid metal effects for Terminator 2: Judgment Day and helped render the lifelike dinosaurs in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, both of which set new standards for cinematic realism.
