Mario Edgio Pantaleone Fabrizi was an English comedian and actor of Italian descent, born on 25 June 1924 in Holborn, London, England, to Italian parents. His mother's maiden name was Pisani, and his father held the Italian noble title of Vicomte (visconte), a distinction that passed to Mario upon his father's death in 1959. Fabrizi was easily recognizable throughout his career thanks to his luxuriant moustache, which became something of a trademark during his years performing on British television and in cinema. He began his career in show business in 1956 and remained active until shortly before his untimely passing in 1963. On ITV, Fabrizi became a familiar face to audiences through his role as Corporal "Moosh" Merryweather in Granada Television's popular series The Army Game, where his comedic timing endeared him to a wide viewership. He was also a regular member of the ensemble cast of the BBC sitcom Hancock's Half Hour, working alongside the legendary Tony Hancock. His most notable film role came as Neville Shanks, the photographer, in Hancock's 1963 film The Punch and Judy Man. Throughout his short but prolific career, Fabrizi also collaborated frequently with comedic greats such as Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan, appearing in a range of productions during the golden age of British comedy. His filmography includes notable appearances in Two-Way Stretch (1960), The Rebel (1961), Carry On Cruising (1962), Village of Daughters (1962), The Wrong Arm of the Law (1963), The Mouse on the Moon (1963), and The Pink Panther (1963), the latter being his final film role, released after his death. Fabrizi married Katherine Boyne of Leeds on 28 May 1960, and the couple had a son named Anthony, born in 1961. Tragically, Mario Fabrizi died of a stress-related illness on 5 April 1963 at his home in Neasden, London, at the age of just 38. He was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Harrow Road, Kensal Green, London, W.10. Just a week before his death, he had announced his intention to leave show business to become an advertising executive, as he had been without work for four months. His son Anthony survived him and went on to become a businessman based in the City of London.
