Charles Kenneth Anton Benda, professionally known as Kenneth Benda, was an esteemed English actor whose career spanned both the golden age of British television and the classical stage. Born on 3 June 1902 in Hampstead, London, he came from a distinguished family background with deep continental roots. His father, Charles Benda, served as a company director and merchant specializing in Oriental Goods. His grandparents, Anton Benda and Frances Mandelbaum, had immigrated from the Kingdom of Bavaria before becoming naturalized British subjects in the late 19th century. On 2 June 1932, Benda married Lucy Evelyn Alston, the daughter of Sir Beilby Alston, at St Peter's Church in Cranley Gardens. Together they raised two children: Anthony and Rosemary Evelyn, the latter born in 1936. Rosemary later married Robert Calder-Smith in 1960, giving the couple five grandchildren who would carry on the family lineage. In his later years, Benda retired to the Old Vicarage in Crondall, near Farnham, Surrey, where he lived until his death on 26 July 1978 at the age of 76 in Hammersmith, London. His beloved widow survived him until 1991, and both are buried at Crondall.

Benda established himself as a prolific character actor across numerous iconic British television series throughout the 1960s and 1970s. His television credits included memorable appearances in No Hiding Place, The Saint, and The Avengers—most notably in the episode "A Sense of History" (1966). He also appeared in Z-Cars, The Prisoner, and Doctor Who, featuring in the serial "The Claws of Axos" in 1971. Additionally, he was seen in the science fiction series Doomwatch. His filmography encompassed both serious drama and comedy, with roles in The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970), The Ruling Class (1972), and Horror Hospital (1973). He further appeared in The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother (1975) and International Velvet (1978). Beyond the screen, Benda maintained a strong connection to the theatrical tradition. He performed small but significant roles at The Old Vic and with Peter Hall's National Theatre company. These stage appearances demonstrated his versatility and commitment to the craft across multiple mediums until his final retirement from acting.
