**Ken Takakura** (born *Goichi Oda* on February 16, 1931, in Nakama, Fukuoka) was a towering figure of Japanese cinema whose career spanned nearly six decades and encompassed more than two hundred films. His early life was marked by a disciplined education at Tochiku High School, where he boxed and joined an English society, experiences that helped forge the stoic, street‑wise swagger that would become his screen trademark. After graduating from Meiji University, he impulsively auditioned for the Toei Film Company in 1955 and made his cinematic debut in *Denko Karate Uchi* (1956), quickly becoming Toei’s emblem of the hard‑boiled anti‑hero. The breakout role came with the 1965 yakuza epic *Abashiri Prison*, cementing his status as the archetypal tough‑guy, a reputation he refined through iconic performances in *Showa Zankyo‑den* and the *Abashiri* sequels.
