John Rhys-Davies: Movies & Box Office

John Rhys-Davies, born 5 May 1944, is a prestigious Welsh actor best known for his roles as Sallah in the Indiana Jones franchise and Gimli in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. His work in these popular franchises has garnered him nominations for three Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award. Rhys-Davies also starred in Victor/Victoria, The Living Daylights, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Aquaman, and its sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. He has also made notable contributions to the voice acting world in Aladdin and the King of Thieves, The Jungle Book 2, Gargoyles, and SpongeBob SquarePants. His television career spans roles in I, Claudius, Shōgun, The Untouchables, and Sliders.

Born to Welsh parentage in Salisbury, Rhys-Davies spent his early years in diverse locations like Tanganyika (now Tanzania) and Ammanford due to his father's role in the colonial police. He furthered his education at the University of East Anglia where he co-founded the drama club. He earned spots in UK television and began appearing in international roles in the late 1970s. Rhys-Davies also contributed his voice to many video games and animated television series like Justice League, SpongeBob SquarePants, Gargoyles, and others. He is renowned for his role of Gimli in the famous Lord of the Rings trilogy and also lent his voice to the character of Treebeard in the same series. Rhys-Davies is a resident of the Isle of Man and provides the introductory voice-over to Castle Rushen on the island. In his personal life, he was married to Suzanne Wilkinson until her death in 2010. He has been in a relationship with Lisa Manning since 2004 and has three children.
