John Mulaney is an American stand‑up comedian, actor, writer, and producer whose career has spanned more than two decades and whose work is noted for its sharp observational humor, surreal twists, and frequent references to everyday awkwardness. Born on August 26, 1982 in Chicago, Illinois to a family of Irish Catholic lawyers, he grew up attending St. Ignatius College Prep and later earned a BA in English from Georgetown University, where he also explored theology and met future collaborators such as Nick Kroll and Mike Birbiglia. After moving to New York City in 2004 he entered the comedy circuit, landing a writing position on Saturday Night Live in 2008 where he co‑created the iconic character Stefon and contributed to numerous sketches until 2013, earning multiple Emmy nominations and a Peabody Award. Parallel to his television work, Mulaney released a series of highly praised stand‑up specials, beginning with The Top Part (2009) and continuing with New in Town (2012), The Comeback Kid (2015), Kid Gorgeous (2018) and Baby J (2023), the latter earning him a second Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special. He also ventured into television acting and producing, starring in his short‑lived Fox sitcom Mulaney (2014‑2015), co‑creating the Broadway hit Oh, Hello with Kroll, and serving as co‑executive producer on Documentary Now! and the Netflix talk show Everybody’s in LA.
