Born into the prominent Lodge family in New York City, he was the son of U.S. Senator Henry Cabot Lodge and grew up amidst the intellectual circles of Boston’s elite. After graduating from Harvard University, Lodge served briefly in the U.S. Navy during World I, then turned to the stage, honing his craft in Broadway productions before transitioning to the silver screen in the early 1930s.
