Gordon Hollingshead was an American film producer, associate producer, and assistant director born on January 8, 1892, in Garfield, New Jersey. He is widely recognized for holding the record for the most Academy Award nominations in the Best Live Action Short Film category, with an impressive 20 nominations throughout his career. Hollingshead began his career in the film industry in 1916 with The Shrine Girl, where he served as both an assistant director and actor. Throughout the silent film era, he assisted in the direction of thirteen films and continued in that capacity until 1934. He joined Warner Bros. in 1921, where he remained until his death in 1952, becoming one of the studio's most prolific and successful producers. He produced his first film, Morocco Nights, in 1934, which launched him into a highly successful producing career that spanned nearly two decades. From 1934 to 1953, Hollingshead produced an astonishing 174 films and film shorts. His short films often featured patriotic subjects, reflecting the broader American sentiment of the era. Notably, he received sixteen Oscar nominations and won seven Academy Awards, including for the acclaimed short film Star in the Night and the documentary short Hitler Lives, both released in 1945. In 1944, he produced the 16-minute film I Am an American, which was featured in American theaters as a short feature in connection with I Am an American Day, now known as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. Interestingly, Hollingshead was the cousin of the mother of acclaimed actress Gene Tierney, connecting him to one of Hollywood's most notable acting families of the mid-20th century.

Hollingshead passed away on July 8, 1952, at the age of 60, while residing in Balboa Island, California. Three of his short films were released posthumously in 1953, a testament to his enduring productivity even after his passing. Many of his short films have been preserved as extras on DVDs of classic Warner Bros. films from the period, allowing modern audiences to rediscover his work. For example, The Romance of Robert Burns is featured on the DVD of Hollywood Hotel, while Sons of Liberty appears on the Dodge City DVD. Other notable shorts include Cavalcade of Archery and Cruise of the Zaca on the Adventures of Robin Hood DVD, as well as Jammin' the Blues and I Won't Play on the Passage to Marseille DVD. His patriotic productions like Star in the Night, which won an Oscar, can be found on the Christmas in Connecticut DVD.
