After completing his formal training in drama, he made his stage debut in the mid‑1960s with the historical play Mariana Pineda, quickly establishing a reputation for intensity and emotional depth. His early film work included roles in The Cannibal Man (1972) and A House Without Boundaries (1972), but it was his collaboration with visionary director Iván Zulueta in the cult classic Arrebato (1979) that vaulted him to international attention, where he delivered a haunting performance as a troubled filmmaker obsessed with the dark allure of cinema.
