Emily Kathleen Anne Mortimer, born on 6 October 1971, is a British actress and filmmaker. Her acting career began with stage productions and has since expanded to various film and television roles. In 2003, Emily won an Independent Spirit Award for her amazing performance in 'Lovely and Amazing'. Emily's other known roles include playing Mackenzie McHale in the HBO series The Newsroom (2012–2014) and creating and writing the series Doll & Em (2014–2015). Emily's diverse roles in movies such as Scream 3 (2000), Match Point (2005), and Mary Poppins Returns (2018) have also left an impression in the movie industry. Emily's career further imploded when she wrote and directed the miniseries The Pursuit of Love (2021), which earned her an nomination for the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Emily's dedication to her roles extending from her voiceover of Sophie in the English-language version of Howl's Moving Castle to her acting in dramas such as Chaos Theory (2008) and Harry Brown (2009). Emily Mortimer was born in Hammersmith, London to a barrister and dramatist, Sir John Mortimer, and his second wife, Penelope Gollop. Emily studied at St Paul's Girls' School in west London and earned a degree in Russian at Lincoln College, University of Oxford. She also had a brief stint as a columnist for The Daily Telegraph. Emily's career in acting took a significant turn when she was spotted by a producer in a student production during her study in Oxford, leading to her casting as the lead in a television adaptation of Catherine Cookson's The Glass Virgin.
