Ellen Lee DeGeneres, commonly known as just Ellen, is an American retired comedian, actress, television host, writer, and producer. Born on January 26, 1958, she is most notable for starring in the television sitcoms Ellen (1994–1998) and The Ellen Show (2001–2002), as well as hosting her own syndicated television talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2003–2022). Her stand-up comedy career began in the early 1980s and she received significant recognition following a 1986 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. As a film actress, DeGeneres starred in numerous films like Mr. Wrong (1996), EDtv (1999), and The Love Letter (1999). She is also recognized for her voice work, notably voicing Dory in the Disney/Pixar animated films Finding Nemo (2003) and Finding Dory (2016). She has received numerous awards for her work, including the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, 20 People's Choice Awards, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In addition to her entertainment work, DeGeneres is also a published author, having authored four books, and has launched her own record company, Eleveneleven, as well as a production company, A Very Good Production. She further expanded her brand with a lifestyle label, ED Ellen DeGeneres, which includes a collection of apparel, accessories, home, baby, and pet items. DeGeneres is recognized for her philanthropic work and in 2011 was named a special envoy for Global AIDS Awareness by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
