Joel Gallen: Movies & Box Office

Joel Gallen is an American director, film and television producer, and the founder of Los Angeles‑based Tenth Planet Productions. Born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Rockville Centre, New York, he earned a BS in marketing from the University of Rhode Island where he first cut his teeth booking concerts and DJing on the campus radio station. After a stint in the mailroom at ICM he moved into television syndication, producing shows such as The Uncle Floyd Show and pioneering the music‑video‑centric specials Deja View, which paired classic songs with original videos starring the original artists. In 1989 Gallen was named head of production for MTV, where he produced the Video Music Awards, helped launch MTV Unplugged, and created the irreverent MTV Movie Awards in 1992, writing and directing the signature short‑film parodies that made the ceremony a pop‑culture staple. His work at MTV established him as a master of live‑event television, a reputation that led to his orchestration of historic benefit telethons including America: A Tribute to Heroes (2001), Shelter from the Storm for Hurricane Katrina (2005), Hope for Haiti Now (2010) and the 2025 FireAid concert, collectively raising billions for disaster relief and earning him Emmy, Peabody, DGA and PGA honors. Gallen has also directed feature films such as Not Another Teen Movie (2001) and executive‑produced the cult classic Zoolander (2001), while overseeing series like The Sing‑Off and America’s Best Dance Crew. From 1993 to the present he has produced and directed the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, the IHeartRadio Music Awards and numerous comedy specials for Ellen DeGeneres, Chris Rock and Comedy Central, cementing his legacy as one of the most versatile and influential architects of modern televised entertainment.
