Don McKellar: Movies, Awards & Box Office

Don McKellar is a respected Canadian actor, writer, playwright, and filmmaker born on August 17, 1963. He became prominent as part of a loosely based collective known as the Toronto New Wave. McKellar is recognized for directing and writing the film Last Night, which secured the Prix de la Jeunesse at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. He also wrote the screenplays for films such as Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, The Red Violin, and Blindness. McKellar often performs in his own projects, including appearances in Atom Egoyan's Exotica in the past and David Cronenberg's eXistenZ and Crimes of the Future.

In addition to his film career, McKellar also has a significant presence on Canadian television, his works featuring in series such as Twitch City, Odd Job Jack, and Slings & Arrows. Notably, he also wrote the book for the popular Tony Award-winning musical The Drowsy Chaperone. Besides being an eight-time nominee, McKellar has twice won the Genie Award. He made his first screen appearance in Bruce McDonald's film Roadkill in 1989, earning Genie Award nominations for best supporting actor and best screenwriter, thereby propelling him into the spotlight in Canada. Another significant role was as the barber Pokey Jones in the 1991 film Highway 61. In addition to acting, McKellar is also a filmmaker, his directorial debut with Last Night (1998) winning significant critical acclaim.
