Dolores Ibárruri, known as La Pasionaria, was born Isidora Dolores Ibárruri Gómez on 9 December 1895 in the mining town of Gallarta, Biscay, Spain. She was the eighth of eleven children of a Basque miner and a Castilian mother, and her early life was marked by poverty and hard labour as a seamstress and housemaid. By the age of fifteen she left school to support her family, and she soon entered the world of labour activism, writing her first article under the pseudonym “La Pasionaria” in 1918 for El Minero Vizcaíno. Her commitment deepened after joining the newly‑founded Communist Party of Spain in 1920, where she rose through the provincial committee and the Central Committee by 1930. During the Second Republic she edited the party newspaper Mundo Obrero and was repeatedly imprisoned for her agitational speeches, yet she continued to rally workers, organize hunger strikes, and champion women’s antifascist organisations. In February 1936 she was elected deputy for Asturias, and after the outbreak of the Civil War she became the voice of the Republic, broadcasting the iconic slogan ¡No Pasarán! from Madrid’s radio stations and urging the defence of the city. Her fiery oratory and relentless propaganda made her an international symbol of anti‑fascist resistance, and she helped organise the rescue of starving children from Asturias, even risking her own freedom in the process.

After the defeat of the Republic she fled to France and then to Moscow, where she served as General Secretary of the PCE from 1942 to 1960 and later as its honorary president. From exile she directed Radio España Independiente, used multiple aliases, and maintained close ties with Soviet leaders, receiving the Order of Lenin and the International Lenin Prize. Returning to Spain in 1977, she was re‑elected to the Cortes, casting a historic “yes” vote for the 1978 Constitution at the age of 82. Her later years were spent advocating for pension rights, attending commemorations of the war, and preserving the memory of the Spanish left until her death in Madrid on 12 November 1989, at the age of 93.
