Carl Milton Bernstein (born February 14, 1944 in Washington, D.C.) is an American investigative journalist and author best known for his role in exposing the Watergate scandal while working for The Washington Post. Raised in a secular Jewish, left‑wing household—his parents Alfred and Sylvia were civil‑rights activists and former members of the Communist Party—Bernstein entered journalism at sixteen as a copyboy for The Washington Star, quickly moving up to reporter before being dismissed from the University of Maryland for poor grades. He joined The Washington Post in 1966, where his sharp writing style and tenacious reporting earned him a reputation as one of the paper’s most formidable writers. In June 1972 he was paired with Bob Woodward to cover the break‑in at the Watergate complex; Bernstein was the first to suspect President Nixon’s involvement, locating a laundered check that linked the president to the burglary and helping to connect the thieves to a larger slush‑fund operation. Their relentless investigation forced congressional hearings, led to Nixon’s resignation, and produced the bestseller All the President’s Men (1974) and its acclaimed film adaptation starring Dustin Hoffman as Bernstein. After leaving the Post in 1977, he expanded into broadcast, serving as ABC News Washington bureau chief and senior correspondent, and later appearing as a political commentator on CNN, CBS, and other networks. Bernstein has authored several books, including The Final Days (1976), Loyalties: A Son’s Memoir (1989), His Holiness (1996, with Marco Politi), A Woman in Charge (2007) about Hillary Clinton, and the memoir Chasing History (2022). His personal life has been highly publicized: he married three times—first to Carol Honsa, then to writer‑director Nora Ephron (with whom he had two sons, Jacob and Max), and finally to former model Christine Kuehbeck. Known for his outspoken personality, he has dated notable figures such as Bianca Jagger, Martha Stewart, and Elizabeth Taylor, and continues to comment on contemporary politics well into the 2020s.
