Cahide Sonku, born Cahide Serap on December 27, 1912, in Sanaa, Yemen, was a pioneering Turkish actress, model, writer, and notably the first female film director in Turkey. Her journey into the world of cinema and theater began during her secondary school education, where she first discovered her passion for performing on stage. At just 16 years old, she was accepted into Darülbedayi, the prestigious Turkish theater institution, and quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the most popular actors of Istanbul City Theatres. Her early acting career started with the role in Seven Village Zeynebi, which she performed first at the People's Houses Theater, then at the Istanbul Municipality Conservatory, and finally at Darülbedayi. The influential figure Muhsin Ertuğrul discovered her talent and played a crucial role in shaping her career path. In a groundbreaking move that cemented her legacy in Turkish cinema, Sonku founded her own production company, Sonku Film, in 1950, making her a true trailblazer among women in the Turkish film industry.

However, her entrepreneurial venture faced a devastating setback in 1963 when a fire completely destroyed the company's building, leading to her bankruptcy. Despite this tragic event, Sonku continued her work at the City Theater thanks to Muhsin Ertuğrul's continued support and influence. In her later years, she unfortunately struggled with alcohol addiction, which marked the difficult final chapter of her life. Sonku's significant contributions to Turkish cinema were formally recognized when she received the Turkish Film Critics Association service award in 1979. She passed away on March 18, 1981, at the Alkazar Cinema in Istanbul, at the age of 68, and was laid to rest in Zincirlikuyu Cemetery. Her enduring legacy continues to be honored through the Cahide Sonku Prize, awarded annually at the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. Furthermore, her remarkable life has inspired numerous cultural depictions, including a 1989 television series titled Cahide starring Hale Soygazi, as well as several short films in subsequent years featuring acclaimed actresses such as Merih Fırat, Farah Zeynep Abdullah, and İpek Bilgin portraying her iconic figure for new generations.
