After his father fell in the First World War, the future star spent his childhood in the nearby village of Bourville, a name he later adopted as his stage surname. Bourvil’s early years were marked by a love of music and performance; he began singing on local radio before joining the theatrical troupe that would launch his film career in the early 1940s.
