Björn Granath (born Björn Gösta Tryggve Granath on 5 April 1946 in Örgryte, a district of Gothenburg, Sweden) was one of the most versatile Swedish actors of his generation, appearing in more than one hundred film and television productions as well as an extensive stage repertoire. He began his screen career in the late 1960s, with an early role in the 1969 drama Mistreatment, and quickly established a reputation for moving effortlessly between comedy and serious drama. Over the next five decades he worked with renowned directors such as Jan Troell, Ingmar Bergman’s collaborators, and Lukas Moodysson, delivering memorable performances in films like Pelle the Conqueror (1987), The Best Intentions (1992), and the internationally recognized The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009). In addition to his screen work, Granath was a prominent figure at Sweden’s Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten), where he was employed as an actor and director from 1987 until 2007. His stage presence was praised for its authority and subtlety, and he was slated to portray the Earl of Buckingham in a 2017 revival of Richard III at the time of his sudden death. Granath’s contributions to Swedish culture were recognized with prestigious honors, including the Eugene O'Neill Award in 2003 and the royal medal Litteris et Artibus in 2000. He was married to Ann‑Margreth Fyrgård, with whom he had two children, and remained active in his profession until his final television appearance in the series Vår tid är nu in 2017. His death on 5 February 2017 in Stockholm, at the age of 70, was mourned by colleagues and audiences alike, cementing his legacy as a distinguished actor whose body of work continues to influence Swedish cinema and theatre.
