In the 1950s, nine-year-old Elina, Natalie Minnevik, lives with her mother and younger siblings in the Torne Valley in the north of Sweden, near the Finnish border. Her father, whom she loved dearly, died of tuberculosis a few years ago. Elina finds solace in wandering out onto the dangerous marshlands to have imaginary conversations with her dead father. She herself contracted tuberculosis, but recovered. Because she was ill for so long, she is obliged to repeat a whole year at school. However, since she missed so much schooling, she has been placed in a new class with a different teacher, the strict Tora Holm Bibi Andersson.

Elina’s family belongs to a Finnish-speaking minority, frowned upon by the stern Miss Holm. Miss Holm sees it as her mission to shield her pupils from the pitfalls of life, insisting that only those who speak perfect Swedish have any chance of a happy and successful life. Elina’s mother, Marta Marjaana Maijala, and a liberal young male teacher all try to mediate the escalating clash between Elina and Miss Holm. When Elina stands up for a schoolmate, Sara Arnia, the sense of justice she learned from her father becomes evident, and she proves far stronger than Miss Holm anticipated.

The conflict comes to a head as the pressure mounts, and Elina flees to the dangerous moor, a decision that reflects the fragility of conformity in a town wary of difference. Her resilience and moral clarity challenge the rigid ideas that have governed her life, and the story follows her steady, brave path as she navigates the consequences of standing up against authority while leaning on the support of her family and a few compassionate adults who try to guide her.
