Betty Buckley (born July 3, 1947) is an American actress, singer, and music teacher whose career spans over six decades, encompassing Broadway triumphs, notable film and television roles, and a prolific recording legacy. Raised in Fort Worth, Texas, she made her Broadway debut in the original production of 1776 in 1969 and quickly earned the nickname “The Voice of Broadway” from New York Magazine, a testament to her powerful mezzo‑soprano and commanding stage presence. Her breakthrough came in 1982 when she originated the role of Grizabella in Cats, delivering the iconic performance of “Memory” and securing the 1983 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, a milestone that cemented her status as a theatrical legend.
