Berta Drews was a German stage and film actress whose career spanned five decades, from the early sound era of the 1930s to the television boom of the 1980s. Born on 19 November 1901 in Berlin, then part of the German Empire, she entered the theatrical world at a time of intense cultural change, honing her craft in both repertory theatres and emerging film studios. Her breakthrough came in 1933 when she was cast in Hitlerjunge Quex, widely recognized as the first Nazi‑propaganda film, a production that premiered before Adolf Hitler and Baldur von Schirach, thrusting her into the national spotlight. Despite the politically charged atmosphere, Drews managed to cultivate a reputation for versatile character work, appearing in a diverse range of genres including drama, comedy, and romance. Over the next fifty years she accumulated more than sixty film credits, collaborating with notable directors such as Helmut Käutner and Gustav Ucicky. Her performances in Die Feuerzangenbowle (1944) and Der Hauptmann von Köpenick (1956) demonstrated a keen ability to convey both the subtle humor and the psychological depth required by post‑war German cinema. In addition to her screen work, Drews remained active on stage, where her commanding presence and nuanced delivery earned critical acclaim. On a personal level, she married fellow actor Heinrich George, a leading figure of the era, and together they raised two sons, the younger of whom, Götz George, would become one of Germany’s most celebrated actors. The partnership blended professional ambition with familial devotion, and the family’s artistic legacy continued well beyond Berta’s own retirement in 1983. She passed away in West Berlin on 10 April 1987, leaving behind a rich body of work that reflects the turbulent history and evolving aesthetic of German film throughout the twentieth century.
