Ziegenthals, Jürgen Prochnow, a failed student who ekes out a living as an academic ghost writer, stumbles into a case that unsettles the quiet order of his life. While digging through academic papers, he uncovers a startling truth: the respected sociology professor, Klaus Schwarzkopf as Rüdiger Kolczyk, plagiarized his doctoral dissertation by translating the work of an American scholar. This discovery sparks a calculated plan for revenge, and Ziegenthals decides to blackmail Kolczyk, demanding 10,000 DM up front and monthly payments of 1,500 DM.

Kolczyk, initially willing to pay to keep the secret intact, eventually offers his own chilling warning: > “only one of us will survive.” This deadly threat signals the brutal tone that will define their conflict. In his bid to understand his blackmailer, Kolczyk turns to Miezi, Elke Sommer, a housemate and friend of Ziegenthals who unwittingly becomes a crucial link in the web of deceit. Miezi, a woman who has saved enough money to leave her profession, is drawn deeper into the danger as her violent ex-boyfriend and former pimp, Kalle Prötzel, is released from prison and murders her, seizing her savings in a brutal act that shocks everyone involved.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities uncover that Miezi had an appointment with Kolczyk and that Kolczyk has been funneling money to Ziegenthals. The revelation that both men are prime suspects intensifies the animosity between them, turning a private feud into a public confrontation. Kolczyk starts to toy with Ziegenthals’ suspicions, weaving psychological traps to destabilize him and to control the narrative of their feud.

Amid the growing tension, Ziegenthals forges an uneasy alliance with Kolczyk’s daughter, Ginny, Kristina Nel, drawing her into his orbit and eventually making her his lover. The arrangement forces both Ginny and Ziegenthals to maintain a delicate façade in public, pretending to be merely friends even as their private liaison deepens. The interwoven deceptions—blackmail, mind games, a fatal killing, and a dangerous romance—conspire to pull the characters toward an inevitable, catastrophic conclusion that neither can avert.

The story unfolds with a cold, calculating energy that blends manipulation, betrayal, and emotional risk, painting a portrait of two men locked in a deadly game of wits and pride. The tension remains taut as the characters navigate a maze of motives, secrets, and consequences, leaving the viewer with a haunting sense of where deceit can lead when the line between victim and villain becomes dangerously blurred.
