Ben Wheatley: Movies, Awards & Box Office

Ben Wheatley, born in 1972, is an English filmmaker, film editor, and animator, celebrated for his renowned work in thriller and horror genres. After making his beginnings in advertising, Wheatley started gaining recognition for his commercials and short films before transitioning into feature films and television programmes. His films are often characterized by heavy elements of black comedy and satire. Wheatley's body of work includes short animations and games found on the "Mr and Mrs Wheatley" site, recognized by large media companies, extending his work into mainstream media. He directed live-action sections of "Modern Toss" and also wrote and created clips for BBC Two's "Time Trumpet." He directed the feature film "Down Terrace," which won the "Next Wave" prize at Fantastic Fest and Best UK Feature at Raindance. Wheatley's other notable works include "Kill List," "Sightseers," "A Field in England," "High-Rise," "Free Fire," and "Meg 2: The Trench." He also authored and directed "Free Fire" and "Happy New Year, Colin Burstead" for the BBC 2018 Christmas schedule. In 2018, he signed on to direct an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's gothic romance novel "Rebecca." In 2020, Wheatley wrapped production on "In the Earth," a horror film set in a pandemic.

In the personal sphere, Wheatley met Amy Jump during his time at Haverstock School in North London, and the couple, who co-founded the "Mr and Mrs Wheatley" blog, have been together since. They live in Brighton and have a son. Wheatley also has an ongoing career in directing music videos, including "Formaldehyde" by Editors and "Mork n Mindy" by Sleaford Mods. In 2019, Wheatley was slated to direct the sequel for "Tomb Raider," but was replaced due to production issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. His latest project involves the sequel to the sci-fi horror film "The Meg," based on Steve Alten's series of novels.
