Audrey Christie (June 27, 1912 – December 19, 1989) was a versatile American performer whose career spanned stage, screen, and television for more than five decades. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she entered the world of entertainment as a teenager, leaving a fine‑arts school at fifteen to join the Six Chicago Steppers, a popular vaudeville act that gave her early exposure to singing and dancing. By the late 1920s she had transitioned to Broadway, debuting in Follow Thru (1929) and subsequently appearing in productions such as Sailor, Beware! (1933), The Women (1936), I Married an Angel (1938), and Without Love (1942). Her sharp comic timing and impeccable dance skills earned her a Donaldson Award for The Voice of the Turtle, cementing her reputation as a leading lady of the stage. Christie’s film work began in the early 1940s with titles like Keeper of the Flame (1943) and continued with memorable supporting roles in classics such as Deadline – U.S.A. (1952), Carousel (1956), Splendor in the Grass (1961), The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964), Harlow (1965), and Mame (1974). On television she became a familiar face through appearances on Studio One, Fair Exchange, and a recurring turn on The Cara Williams Show (1964‑65); later she delighted audiences as Maude’s overbearing mother on Maude (1975) and as a stage‑mother figure on Barney Miller. Throughout her long career she remained celebrated for her ability to blend humor, warmth, and a strong work ethic, qualities that made her a beloved character actress until her final screen credit in 1978’s Harper Valley PTA. Christie passed away from emphysema at her West Hollywood home, leaving behind a legacy of over 50 years of memorable performances.
