Daniel Anthony Padilla was born on September 16, 1987 in Sacramento, California and grew up in the neighboring community of Carmichael. His father is of Filipino descent while his mother is German, and the couple separated when he was only two years old, leaving him to be raised primarily by his mother alongside two younger half‑brothers. Because his mother suffered from severe agoraphobia and could not work outside the home, the family relied on food stamps and the young Padilla assumed substantial household responsibilities, especially after the death of his grandmother, who had been the main caretaker. He attended Del Campo High School, where his penchant for comedy and performance began to surface, and later enrolled at American River College for two years before dropping out to pursue the rapid growth of his online content creation. In 2002 he registered smosh.com, posting Flash animations and using the site as a personal networking hub while he recovered from a bout of Henoch–Schönlein purpura. The name Smosh originated from a mis‑heard “smosh pit,” and the platform later blossomed when he reunited with his sixth‑grade science classmate Ian Hecox, forming a duo that would dominate early YouTube culture.

The Padilla‑Hecox partnership officially joined YouTube in 2005, quickly gaining fame for lip‑sync videos such as the viral "Pokémon Theme Music Video." Their shift toward short comedy skits cemented Smosh as a staple of internet humor, leading to the 2011 acquisition by Defy Media and subsequent expansion into film with Smosh: The Movie (2015) and voice work in The Angry Birds Movie (2016) and its sequel (2019). After feeling constrained by corporate ownership, Padilla left Smosh in 2017, launching his own channel and the interview series I Spent a Day With…, which earned him the moniker “YouTube’s Interview King.” He founded Pressalike, Inc. in 2020 to produce unscripted content, and in 2023 he and Hecox repurchased a controlling stake in Smosh, re‑branding Pressalike as Smoshalike and returning to their creative roots while continuing to explore filmmaking, comedy, and digital storytelling.
