Anita Guha (17 January 1939 – 20 June 2007) was a celebrated Indian actress who carved a distinct niche for herself in the Hindi film industry, particularly through her portrayals of mythological characters. Born on 17 January 1939, she came to Mumbai in the 1950s as a beauty pageant contestant at the age of 15, eventually making her film debut with Tonga-wali (1955). She quickly rose to prominence with notable performances in films such as Dekh Kabira Roya (1957), Sharada (1957), and Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959), the latter earning her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress, the only nomination of her career. In 1961, she appeared as Sita in Babubhai Mistry's Sampoorna Ramayana, a role that made her a household name across India. She also played Sita in other mythological films including Shree Ram Bharat Milap (1965) and Tulsi Vivah (1971), establishing herself as one of the most recognizable faces of the genre. She additionally starred in period films such as Sangeet Samrat Tansen (1962), Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan (1963), and Veer Bhimsen (1964), showcasing her versatility beyond mythological cinema. The pinnacle of her career came with the title role in Jai Santoshi Maa (1975), a role she took despite never having heard of the goddess Santoshi before, and the low-budget film became a surprise box office hit and cultural phenomenon. Shot in just 10–12 days during which she fasted, the movie was treated as a temple by devotees, and she was perceived by many as a real goddess, with people approaching her for blessings, though she never became a devotee of Santoshi Maa, remaining a follower of goddess Kali. She also appeared in notable films such as Purnima (1965), Pyar Ki Rahen (1959), Gateway of India (1957), Lukochuri (1958), Sanjog (1961), and the landmark Rajasthani film Baba Ramdev, and played Rajesh Khanna's adoptive mother in the blockbuster Aradhana (1969). She also starred in other mythological films like Kavi Kalidas (1959), Jai Dwarkadesh (1977), and Krishna Krishna (1986), but became typecast as a mythological actress, and acting offers eventually stopped coming her way. Personally, she was married to actor Manik Dutt, with whom she had no biological children but later adopted a girl, and she passed away from cardiac failure on 20 June 2007 in Mumbai after her husband's death. She is also remembered as the maternal aunt of actor Prema Narayan, who is the daughter of her sister Anuradha Guha, leaving behind a memorable chapter in Indian cinema history.
