Andrei Zvyagintsev: Movies & Box Office

Andrey Petrovich Zvyagintsev, a prestigious Russian film director and screenwriter, is known for his impressive array of critically acclaimed films. Born on 6 February 1964 in Novosibirsk, Siberia, he dove into the world of arts from a young age, graduating from the theater school in Novosibirsk at the age of 20. He went on to study at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts in Moscow, where he has been residing since 1986. Starting 1992, he pursued a career as an actor for film and theater for eight long years. His directorial debut began in 2000 with the television series The Black Room on REN TV, advancing to feature films afterwards. His first feature film The Return, which debuted in 2003, won him a prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. His career took off from there, directing successful films such as The Banishment (2007), Elena (2011), Leviathan (2014), and Loveless (2017). Many of his films have premiered at Cannes, with both Leviathan and Loveless receiving international acclaim and a number of prestigious award recognitions. Leviathan was even nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

As of 2023, Zvyagintsev is working on a new project titled Jupiter, poised to be his next big hit. More controversially, Andrei contracted a severe form of COVID-19 in 2021, which led to significant health complications including sepsis and polyneuropathy. He was reported to be still receiving treatment as late as May 2022 in Germany.
