Adrian Townsend Schiller (21 February 1964 – 3 April 2024) was a versatile English actor whose career spanned more than three decades across stage, television, film, and even video games. Born in Oxford, England, Schiller described himself as “a Jew, but not Jewish,” noting an upbringing outside of any formal Jewish tradition, a detail that later informed several of his theatrical projects exploring identity. He first broke onto television in a December 1992 episode of Prime Suspect, and quickly built a reputation for authoritative, gravitas‑filled performances, a quality highlighted in his celebrated role as Ealdorman Aethelhelm in three seasons of The Last Kingdom (2018‑2022). His screen work was extensive, featuring parts in beloved series such as Doctor Who (“The Doctor’s Wife”, 2011), Victoria (2016‑2019), and Raised by Wolves (2020), as well as notable films including The Danish Girl (2015), Suffragette (2015), and The Mercy (2017). Schiller also contributed his voice and likeness to several video‑game titles, ranging from Assassin’s Creed III (2012) to Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings (2009), demonstrating a willingness to explore emerging media.
