Kapil Dubey, played by Vicky Kaushal, and Somya Chawla Dubey, played by Sara Ali Khan, are a middle-class couple from Indore who dream of owning a home through the government’s flagship program, the Awas Yojna scheme. They live in a crowded joint family, with Kapil’s parents and his aunt and uncle sharing the space, forcing them to sleep in the hall. Somya, a Sikh woman from a Brahmin background, faces subtle disdain from Kapil’s aunt, and Kapil often tries to smooth things over by taking her out for her favorite meals.

Their search for a house turns into a test of patience as a pushy broker ups the price, making a straightforward purchase feel out of reach. When Kapil goes to inquire about the Awas Yojna, he returns empty-handed after a heated exchange with an employee. A government clerk who also runs a side business as a broker offers a troubling shortcut: to be eligible, Kapil would either have to be kicked out of their inheritance or Somya would have to divorce him so she could qualify as a single divorced woman. They initially brush off the idea, but Somya’s longing for a home begins to tilt the balance toward a drastic option.

What follows is a string of comedic misadventures as they fake a divorce in front of their families and friends, hoping to unlock a space of their own. The plan seems to work, and the divorce is approved, but trouble arises when the broker is exposed and the Yojna draw is halted. A heated argument erupts between Kapil and Somya, with him blaming her greed for pushing them into this predicament, and her insisting that the motive was never true financial gain—only a chance at privacy and stability.

The turning point arrives when Somya secures the papers for a new home and, in a candid moment with her parents, reveals the whole deception. They all go to Kapil’s house to come clean, only for a new crisis to surface: Kapil’s aunt collapses with a failing liver and requires urgent medical attention and a transplant.

Amid the medical emergency, Somya experiences a reassessment of what truly matters—family and togetherness. She decides that a separate house is not worth sacrificing those bonds. In a gesture of solidarity, the couple hands over the keys and the housing papers to the society’s security guard, a devoted father who has a young daughter of his own and no home to call his own.

Time passes, and Somya and Kapil find their way back to each other, choosing to remarry and build a new life that embraces kinship, shared spaces, and mutual care.
