Nikolai ‘Kolya’ Rodchenko, Mikhail Baryshnikov, is a renowned Russian ballet dancer who had previously defected from the Soviet Union. When a flight bound for Tokyo encounters electrical trouble and crash lands in Siberia, he is injured and identified by KGB officer Colonel Chaiko. Chaiko then brings in Raymond Greenwood, a tap dancer who has also defected to the Soviet Union, to escort Kolya and keep an eye on him, pulling in Gregory Hines to join the effort and whisk them both to Leningrad. Chaiko’s goal is clear: Kolya should perform at the season’s opening night at the Kirov, and Raymond should look after him during this pivotal moment. To persuade Kolya, Chaiko also leverages Galina Ivanova, a former ballerina who never left the Soviet Union and is an old flame of Kolya.

After an initial period of racial and artistic friction, the two defectors—moving in opposite directions—begin to form a strong, if uneasy, bond. When Raymond discovers that his wife Darya is pregnant, he decides he does not want their child to grow up in the Soviet Union, and together, with Galina’s help, they begin to plan a daring escape. Galina’s lingering feelings for Rodchenko add a charged layer to the plot, intertwining art, desire, and political risk. During the escape attempt, Raymond makes a selfless choice to stay behind and delay Chaiko, buying valuable time for Kolya and Darya to reach the U.S. consulate at Leningrad. Though Raymond is captured and imprisoned, he is eventually traded for a political prisoner from Latin America, allowing him to reunite with Darya and Kolya.

The narrative unfolds against a backdrop of luminous dance and tense political intrigue, exploring how art can illuminate the human longing for freedom even in the face of oppression. It is a story of friendship forged under pressure, sacrifice made in the name of family, and the enduring hope that a life beyond borders can be found through courage, companionship, and perseverance.
