After being released from prison, Max Truemont and his fiancée Roxanne dream of a fresh start by running a small diner. When a loan request for $50,000 is denied by the bank, the couple finds themselves with few viable options. Desperation pushes Max to reconnect with his former partner, Sydney Braverman, and their associate, Vince Delayo, as they hatch a plan to abduct eight-year-old David Sandborn, the son of a wealthy woman in New England, under the guidance of a mysterious mastermind.
The kidnapping goes forward, and the group retreats to a secluded hideout to await ransom instructions. As the hours pass, tension within the tight-knit crew rises. Max starts to realize that the boy may not be as innocent as he first appeared, and this doubt begins to fracture the alliance, with each member drawn into increasingly dangerous and involuntary acts as commands to kill one another are issued.
A shocking twist shifts the entire dynamic: the mastermind behind the plot is David’s mother, Catherine Sandborn. She reveals that the boy is a demon who can whisper ideas into weak-minded people, a power she believes can be exploited to force the adults to do her bidding. Her plea to Max is stark: kill the boy on her behalf. When Max refuses, she takes her own life, severing that crucial link to the mastermind and leaving the group to confront the moral ruin of their actions.
As the disappearances and coercion pile up, the plan spirals further out of control. In a final act of violence and desperation, Max kills David, but Roxanne pays the ultimate price in the chaos that surrounds them, crushed by the consequences of choices made in a desperate bid for a new life. The film closes on a somber note, underscoring how quickly ambition and fear can unravel trust, families, and futures.
